How to use hdri in Sketchup with V-Ray?

Sketchup and Vray are one of the most popular combos for architects in many studios. Loading an HDRI map in SketchUp with V-Ray is essential for achieving realistic lighting and reflections in your scenes. Here's a guide on how to do it:

  1. Prepare your HDRI Map: Make sure you have an HDRI map ready to use. You can find HDRI maps online, both free and paid. Ensure the map suits the lighting and ambiance you want for your scene.

  2. Open SketchUp with V-Ray: Launch SketchUp and ensure that the V-Ray plugin is installed and activated.

  3. Set up your Scene: Create or open the scene where you want to use the HDRI map. Ensure that your scene is set up with the objects and materials you intend to render.

  4. Access the V-Ray Asset Editor: In SketchUp, go to the Extensions menu, then V-Ray. Click on "Asset Editor" to open the V-Ray Asset Editor panel.

  5. Navigate to the Environment Section: In the V-Ray Asset Editor panel, navigate to the "Settings" tab. Then, under the "Environment" section, you'll find options for controlling the environment lighting.

  6. Load the HDRI Map: In the Environment section, locate the "Background" option. Click on the button next to it to open the material editor. Here, you can create a new material or use an existing one. To load the HDRI map, click on the small square next to the "Texture" slot within the material editor. Browse to the location of your HDRI map and select it.

  7. Adjust HDRI Settings (Optional): You can adjust various settings related to the HDRI map, such as rotation, mapping type, and intensity, to achieve the desired lighting effect. Experiment with these settings to get the lighting just right for your scene.

  8. Apply the HDRI Map to the Environment: Once you've loaded and adjusted the HDRI map, apply it to the environment by selecting the material you created or edited and clicking the "Assign Material to Selection" button. This will apply the HDRI map to the environment of your scene.

  9. Render the Scene: With the HDRI map applied, you can now render your scene using V-Ray. Adjust any additional settings as needed and initiate the render process to see how the HDRI lighting affects your scene.

By following these steps, you can effectively load an HDRI map in SketchUp with V-Ray, enhancing the realism and quality of your renders.
